Groningen 1982-1983
One quiet morning in a 5x6m-meeting room next to Prof. Oldhoff’s room, all the cancer experts at the Academisch Ziekenhuis Groningen (AZG) held a meeting. It was an undisturbed and detailed talk. They were discussing all the patients at the AZG one by one. That routine Wednesday morning meeting has been held for decades. There is something that ties all these experts together, that is, the desire to provide the best for the patients. It is in here that I truly feel and understand the meaning of “commitment and discipline of a strong team work”. It is crystal clear that quality lies in the details.
The paradigm of medical services has been changed. Medical decision based only on doctor’s opinion has to be left behind. Medical decision must be based on valid medical evidence. Each and every medical act to be highly accurate and there is no possibility of bargaining; the concept that the doctor is the only decision maker should be put behind because strong team work is absolute. The swift technological advances have offered hopes for cancer patients. On the other hand the procedure to take care of patients is becoming more and more complex and sophisticated so that the accuracy of choosing the right technology must be made accountable which means that is should truly bring added value for all the patients.

Klinik Onkologi Surabaya (KOS) – Surabaya Oncology Clinic was established in Jalan Bawean 40, Surabaya, initiated by Ario Djatmiko, Estiningtyas, Alia Wahyuna and Ario Djatmoko. KOS has brought in basic transformation to the medical service system in Indonesia. The concept of “a one roof clinic” assures multi discipline care for the patients, provides more focused, coordinated and efficient services. Our gratitude should go to Mr. Makarim Wibisono, Mrs. Adila Suwarmo, Prof. J. Oldhoff, Prof. H. Hoekstra, dr. J.L. Peterse, Dr. Emiel J.T. Rutgers, Dr. Mary T. Rickard and Dr. H. Mahdi Rezai who are always there along the clinic’s long journey.

Technological and system service advances forced us to make some adjustments. KOS has become Rumah Sakit Onkologi Surabaya (RSOS) – Surabaya Oncology Hospital yet the “Professionalism and Humanity”, spirit of Surabaya Oncology Clinic, will always be with us.
